Why Bulgaria?

Diverse landscape
Bulgaria is mainly associated with hot beaches on the Black Sea coast. However, it is an extremely diverse country. There are four mountain ranges here, with the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula – Musala (2925 m above sea level). Picturesque rivers with many artificial lakes cross these mountains. You can also find unique geological formations here, including the largest caves in Europe.

History and culture
Bulgaria has a long history and rich culture, which makes traveling through its terrain not only an off-road challenge but also an educational experience. The country is full of relics from the Roman era, the Bulgarian empire, and the Turkish occupation. You can visit ancient ruins, historic monasteries, Turkish fortresses, and charming villages and towns.

Exceptional cuisine
Bulgaria is known for its diverse and delicious dishes, such as banitsa, kebapche, and tarator, which will satisfy every palate. Additionally, Bulgarian wines, produced from local grapes, and rakia, a traditional strong brandy, perfectly complement the culinary experience.

Warm climate
Bulgaria has a moderate climate, much warmer than northern Europe, but not as hot as in Greece or Albania, making off-road driving possible and enjoyable for most of the year.

Proximity to Greek beaches
From Bulgaria, it takes only 160 km to reach the most beautiful beaches of the Aegean Sea. I highly recommend this and include it in my Guide – the developed route in Bulgaria ends at a Greek beach.

Low costs
Compared to other Balkan countries, Bulgaria offers lower prices in stores, for accommodation, food, and fuel, making the trip more accessible and economical.

Hospitality of the locals
Bulgarians are known for their hospitality and friendliness, ensuring that travelers in Bulgaria can count on help and a warm welcome. The adventure is also favored by the freedom of travel and camping.

The offered Bulgaria off-road trails will satisfy even the most demanding off-road enthusiasts. In developing this route, I have gathered my many years of experience from individual travels in Bulgaria and the commercial trips I have led.

The route is 1200 km long. It starts at the Romanian-Bulgarian border near the town of Vidin and ends on a Greek beach on the Aegean Sea near Kavala. I recommend it for nine days, which is why it is divided into eight stages. The stages range from 70 to 223 km. Each stage requires about six hours of driving. The rest of the time is left for sightseeing tourist attractions, tasting local food and drinks, and relaxing.

Here are the main attractions of the route:

The Red Rocks near Belogradchik, Venetsa Cave, Magura Cave, Kaleto Fortress, Ladenika Cave, Prohodna Cave, Geopark, Stara Planina Mountains, Rhodope Mountains, Glozhene Monastery, Koprivshtitsa Open-Air Museum Town, Asen’s Fortress, Bachkovo Monastery, the Wonderful Bridges, the Chepelare Resort, Melnik – the wine capital of Bulgaria…

The route can mostly be driven with a factory-made 4×4 vehicle. However, there are sections that may pose a challenge even for well-equipped and experienced crews, especially in bad weather. I have planned for camping in your own tents, although in several places I recommend, as an option, reliable hotels or guesthouses.

The package consists of a PDF file for printing and KML and GPX files for GPS

What will you find in the PDF file?

In the general information section, I present the requirements for travelers in Bulgaria. You will learn about the necessary equipment and the documents you need for the vehicle and crew members. You will learn the rules for road tolls, how and where to pay them. Emergency phone numbers are also provided.

You will also find an invitation to participate in the Never Ending Rally.

Never Ending Rally

Join the largest amateur off-road car competition in Europe. The winner is the crew that completes the most of our routes. You can ride whenever you want! More information is available on this website.

In the detailed descriptions of each stage, I inform you about their length, road conditions and difficulty, applicable or potential restrictions, and hazards. I present the attractions to visit, suggest where to shop, eat, or refuel. I also indicate places to stay overnight.

How to use GPS navigation files?

You can use GPX files on GARMIN devices. However, I recommend using KML files and the free and very simple MAPS.ME application. It works works online and offline on smartphones, tablets, etc. with Android and iOS systems.

Start by installing this application on your device. Then simply send the KML files by email to the mailbox on the device with MAPS.ME and open them. Android immediately installs the route and it is visible on the screen. The system for Apple mobile devices (iOS) requires opening the file (an incomprehensible text will appear) and clicking on the “share” icon in the upper right corner. On the displayed list, select the Maps.Me program.

The MAPS.ME application is compatible with CarPlay and Android Auto. This means that if you connect your phone to a car radio with a display that supports these systems, your route will also be visible on the car screen.

You will receive detailed instructions in an email after purchase, along with a link to download the files. I provide assistance if needed.
